PLANGEA IIS Rio

PLANGEA is a decision support platform to optimise integrated land use planning for conservation, restoration and sustainable agriculture. It generates priority maps and quantifies impacts for multiple criteria and all ecosystems types.

It is completely customisable to decision makers´ choices of criteria, scenarios and scales, capable of operating from farm to global scales. By mapping and quantifying trade-offs across multiple benefits and costs, it supports evidence-based planning and implementation to maximise cost-effectiveness of land-use decisions.

Carbon sequestration

Benefits for climate change mitigation were measured by the amount of carbon dioxide sequestered in the long term following restoration to a reference ecosystem structure in each geographical zone, considering above and below-ground biomass and soil carbon.

Biodiversity

Benefits for biodiversity were quantified as the reduction in potential extinction debt related to habitat loss following ecosystem restoration, assessed individually for 20,319 species of mammals, amphibians and birds.

Cost effectiveness

Costs in terms of conflicts with agriculture (opportunity costs) were measured by the net present value of future profits that could be foregone by restoring cropland or pastureland area back into native vegetation. In addition to that, constant restoration implementation costs were considered to estimate total costs.
